Unfortunately, in the dog world, the e-collar (electronic collar) is viewed the same as a Pitbull. Completely misunderstood. A common misconception is that the e-collar induces harm to our dog. Physical pain in order to get a desired behaviour. However, the e-collar is not the correction that many think it is. It is not a shock but rather a sensation and when used properly, does not hurt your dog. It is annoying but it does not hurt. It is a way to get your dogs attention. The remote allows us to communicate to our dog(s) and it is used in association with positive reinforcement (treats). Anytime the leash disappears, no command with your dog is 100% and there is so much danger when it comes to our dogs. We need to have a way to communicate with them because realistically, if your recall does not work, what do you do? Your verbal command and your voice are going against your dog’s primitive instincts and prey mode. They do not care that you have a treat in your hand if they are chasing a rabbit or squirrel. With the e-collar, they have become conditioned that the sensation means that you are trying to get their attention by giving them a command. They will learn that the sensation means stop what they are doing and come running towards you. The e-collar is used in association and collaboration to your what your dog already knows. It is a not a tool to teach new commands, however, it can be used to stop certain behavior (i.e. digging and counter surfing). The e-collar acts as an extension of your voice. The e-collar gives you off leash freedom with a ½ mile distance. It will make all obedience faster and sharper by gaining instant focus. Once your dog knows a command well, the e-collar will make it better. When used correctly, I believe introducing your dog the e-collar is the 2nd best thing you can do. The first, would be enrolling him in an obedience course. Basic obedience can and will save your dogs life one day. Come means come. Stay means stay.
